From taxi-rank stalls to Sunday kitchens, vetkoek (amagwinya, magwinya) is the bread that feeds everyone. Warm, soft and endlessly fillable.
Ingredients
Dough
- 500gcake flour
- 10ginstant dry yeast (1 sachet)
- 1 tbspsugar
- 1 tspsalt
- 375mllukewarm water, plus a little more if needed
To fry
- 1lsunflower oil, for frying
To serve
- apricot jam(optional)
- grated cheddar(optional)
Method
Cook it step by stepStep 1: Mix the dry ingredients
Mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a big bowl.
Step 2: Knead
Add the lukewarm water and mix to a soft, slightly sticky dough. Knead for 8 minutes until smooth and stretchy.
